Dragon Hill Lodge (DHL)

Yes, The Dragon Hill Lodge is still open!

DHL is open and will be for some time, regardless of the rumors you might hear in the Korean community. It's staying awhile.

Eligibility to Stay at DHL

The Dragon Hill Lodge Armed Forces Recreation Center serves members and families members of the U.S. Armed Forces, civil service, contractor employees, retirees and non-retired veterans with VHIC ID cards. The Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018 expanded authorized use to Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war (POW), veterans with VA-documented service-connected disability ratings (VHIC cardholders) and Primary Family Caregivers of eligible Veterans under the VA Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers. Personnel eligible to use the DHL are defined on the DHL websites page https://www.dragonhilllodge.com/about-dragon-hill-lodge/eligibility

Access to the DHL on USAG Yongsan

DOD ID or VHIC ID Card "Usually" Required

Dragon Hill Lodge is the only AFRC facility physically located on a military installation, US Army Garrison Yongsan, and as such, access to the lodge is more complicated. Guests of DHL must not only be authorized AFRC patrons, but also allowed to access the military installation, each of which are not the same.

DOD ID card holders and VA Health Insurance Card (VHIC) card holders have unrestricted access to the USAG Yongsan military installation, thus easy access to DHL.  However, VHIC dependents do not, because dependents are not issued a VHIC card. In addition, VHIC card holders do not have escort authority, so they cannot escort their dependent spouse on base. A VHIC card will be printed with either “Purple Heart”, “Former POW”, or “Service Connected” on the card, but nothing stating Escort Authority. With the passing of the Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act Primary Caregivers of VHIC card holders that do not have an ID card are also authorized to stay at the DHL.

Getting a Dependent of VHIC Card Holder on Base to the DHL

VHIC card holder spouses are authorized to stay at AFRC resorts to include the DHL as a guest. However, as mentioned above, they need to get on base first, and their VHIC card holding sponsor is not allowed to escort them. So, what to do? The DHL management and Provost Marshall Office have coordinated a process to allow such family members access to Yongsan (only) to stay at the Dragon Hill Lodge. To do this, the VHIC card holder must contact the DHL and coordinate with them as per their instructions, which will probably include copies of their VHIC card, passports and other documents. Contact the DHL below for details, specifically the VHIC Card Holder Requesting Base Access for Their Spouse contact.

To Recap for VHIC Card Holders: For base access, for any reason for any base in Korea, if you have a VHIC ID card, you have 24/7 base access, which means access to DHL. The first time you come on any base, go to a Pass&ID office and they will make sure your VHIC ID card is registered into DBIDS. But, this is for only you the veteran holding a VHIC card - no dependents, including spouse. The VHIC card does not give you escort privileges. There is an exception for dependents to access base and stay at the DHL, as noted above. The DHL will get your dependent spouse base access to Yongsan (only Yongsan) for the purpose of staying at the DHL, based on you being allowed as a veteran to stay in AFRC resorts, and your hotel reservation/receipt. What Does The Future Hold For DHL?

Safe For Now

For the time being, the Dragon Hill Lodge is safe in it's current location. It's no secret that eventually a replacement will be built and this DHL (or its land) given to the ROK. But we are years away from that, with no plans on the table, so for now just enjoy.
